h is for harmonizing

I really don’t think there’s anything in the world quite the same as close, beautiful harmonies that come from down deep and make you feel as if the music and the notes are encircling and filling your very being. Learning that I could harmonize was unlike any other discovery thus far. Perhaps it was back in early high school that I realized I could sing notes up and under and around the melody. I was overjoyed, and yet I remember how frustrated Mandi would get with me. “Why can’t she just sing the regular notes?” was probably the thought running through her 10-year-old mind. It was the source of contention on many a road trip between Connecticut and Vermont.

So, I must’ve been beyond thrilled when Mandi’s harmonizing abilities also chose to surface. Not only was I now free to sing whatever tune was in my heart, but, even better, I had a most beautiful voice with which to mingle paralleled or even clashing harmonies. Some of my favorite memories are those that hold the two of us, singing together in the car or sitting on the couch or getting ready for work in the morning. It’s like we get lost in a world where it’s just the two of us, where the singing becomes so encompassing that we can’t help but laugh at how pleased we are with the beauty around us.
